Pattern Shop
High quality castings begin with close tolerance patterns. Barberton Steel Industries is able to control quality by maintaining a fully staffed patern shop on site. The pattern shop is equipped to produce precision patterns in styrofoam and wood. More important, BSI relies on the experience and skilled craftsmen, some of whom are fourth generation pattern makers. | |
Molding
BSI has the capability to run medium to large molds in substantial quantities. But we are also able to provide hand-molded castings for highly specialized, one-of-a-kind products. In either case, we rely on state-of-the-art equipment and technology to produce castings that are precise and free of defects. | |
Melting
The BSI melt shop includes a 5-ton and a 23-ton arc furnace. This provides BSI with a finished casting weight of up to 50,000 lbs. Stainless and other high alloy grades are also routinely processed.
Chemical analyses are performed prior to tapping every heat. Only after the analysis has proved product quality is the furnace tapped. Later, a full chemical analysis is performed on our spectro lab.

Finishing Department
Before shipment, castings are transported to BSI's finishing department for thermal treatment and final cleaning. This department houses annealing furnaces, welding equipment, roto blast, and swing table/shot blast units. All steel castings are treated in one of three annealing furnaces to restore a homogenous grain structure. This ensures the part's mechanical properties and improves consistency in subsequent machining.
After thermal treatment, shot blast is used to remove any remaining mold sand and scale. Castings are given a final inspection for proper cleaning and, where required, non-destructive tests are performed to insure that the highest product quality is maintained Machining capabilites are available upon request. | |
